New Patent Expands Company’s Antimicrobial Technologies Intellectual Property Portfolio and New Continuing Education Course Provides Professional Development
HAYWARD, Calif., July 11, 2017 – Applied Silver, the maker of SilvaClean™ Antimicrobial Treatment, today made multiple announcements in the areas of technology development and continuing education to further strengthen their position as leading innovators and experts in the field of antimicrobial textile technologies.
The company shared that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued U.S. Patent No. 9,689,106, which broadly covers a system which imparts a lasting metallic antimicrobial treatment to fabrics on June 27, 2017. The patent describes an antimicrobial laundry treatment system that delivers precise metallic antimicrobial treatment through a dispensing device that can be seamlessly integrated to standard laundry operations. In practice, the system provides the easiest, the most cost-effective, and the most scalable way to impart antimicrobial properties to all existing textiles.
“This patent further establishes Applied Silver’s technology and service leadership in the antimicrobial textiles space,” said Sean Morham, CEO of Applied Silver. “Our intellectual property portfolio is an important asset, the expansion of which protects our core technology, strengthens our innovative potential, and supports our overall business goals.”
Applied Silver is also partnering with experts in the area of Infection Prevention to develop educational materials that highlight the role of textiles in transmission of microbial contamination and recommended preventive measures. The first Continuing Education (CE) course is now available as an online self-study module titled “Soft Surface Contamination and HAI Risk” on the Applied Silver website. Most infection prevention programs have focused primarily on hard surface cleaning and hand hygiene.
“This course introduces the importance of soft surface considerations as infection prevention professionals evaluate the horizontal interventions necessary to provide a complete program for the patients they support,” said Dr. Priya Balachandran, Vice President of Marketing at Applied Silver. “This medium of transmission has been largely ignored until recently. Our goal at Applied Silver is to work closely with healthcare workers to understand this problem so we are able to provide the SilvaClean solution in the most impactful way.”
The company recently hired Dr. Balachandran to lead its scientific development and marketing efforts. She brings more than 15 years of scientific and business experience in the area on infectious disease and microbial monitoring. Prior to Applied Silver, Dr. Balachandran held leadership positions in, product marketing at NuGEN Technologies, global product management at Thermo Fisher Scientific, and scientific and business roles at Life Technologies. Dr. Balachandran received her Ph.D from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
The SilvaClean technology, an innovative laundry additive that provides ongoing soft surface antimicrobial treatment, is a patented, EPA-approved water-based ionic silver treatment developed and commercialized by Applied Silver, Inc. The SilvaClean system imparts sustained antimicrobial properties to a wide range of fabric items including patient bedding, gowns, worker scrubs, privacy curtains, and sports gear each time they are laundered, protecting them in transport, storage and use from odor- and stain-causing bacteria, mold, and mildew. Already validated and adopted by leading hospital systems, NCAA sports teams, and national athletic associations, the SilvaClean service is a breakthrough key preventive strategy to help reduce microbial growth in fabrics and requires no changes in existing laundry processes.
About Applied Silver, Inc. Incorporated in 2012, Applied Silver is harnessing the power of silver to develop commercial applications for a cleaner world. Applied Silver pioneered the SilvaClean™ technology – an EPA-approved, patented water-based ionic silver treatment that inhibits the growth of odor- and stain-causing bacteria, mold and mildew on textiles by imparting lasting antimicrobial properties to the items each time they are laundered. SilvaClean technology uses a proprietary hardware module to deliver an ionic silver additive into each laundry cycle, all managed by intelligent 24/7 cloud-based monitoring software. Customers see immediate benefits from SilvaClean technology’s turnkey approach and do not have to modify their current inventory management or laundry process to adopt it. For health care customers, the SilvaClean system is sold through Medline Industries, a global manufacturer and distributor of medical products.
